A successful hunt starts long before the first trigger pull. At Bow Creek Ranch Outfitters, we take care of the land, the lodging, the meals, and the guides—but your gear? That’s your domain. And the more prepared you are, the more comfortable and confident you’ll be in the field.
Whether you’re joining us for upland birds, dove, predator hunting, or a one-of-a-kind yak experience, here’s what to bring—and how to pack for success.
Understanding the Kansas Landscape
Western Kansas is open country. Our ranch spans thousands of acres of prairie, draws, native grasses, and crop edges. It’s big, it’s beautiful, and it’s working country—meaning gear that performs well in these conditions makes a difference.
Expect to be on your feet, in the elements, and walking varied terrain depending on the species you’re hunting. Weather can shift quickly, especially in fall and winter months.
Firearms and Ammunition
Each hunt requires different considerations:
- Upland Birds (Pheasant, Quail, Chukar)
A 12 or 20-gauge shotgun is ideal. Over-under, semi-auto, or pump—bring what you shoot best. You’ll want shot sizes in the No. 6 to No. 8 range, depending on the species and conditions. - Dove
Fast-moving mourning doves call for light, quick-shotguns. A 20-gauge is more than sufficient, and No. 7.5 or No. 8 shot is most common. - Predator Hunting
Centerfire rifles like .223, .22-250, or .243 are well-suited to calling coyotes across open prairie. Be sure your rifle is sighted in and familiar in-hand. - Yak Hunts
These large animals demand ethical stopping power. A .30 caliber rifle or similar big-game firearm is appropriate. Bring a load you know and trust.
If you’re unsure about what to bring, contact us ahead of time and we’ll make sure you arrive prepared.
Required and Recommended Gear
Some items are essential across all hunt types. Here’s what we recommend:
Required:
- Blaze orange hat and vest (required by law for bird hunts)
- Valid Kansas hunting license and any species-specific permits
- Durable, waterproof boots suited for uneven terrain
Strongly Recommended:
- Layered clothing: Start cool in the morning, shed layers mid-day, and stay warm at dusk
- Gloves and a neck gaiter (especially on colder days)
- Protective eyewear and ear protection
- Quality socks that wick moisture
- Daypack or hunting vest with water and essentials
- Binoculars (especially for predator or yak hunts)
Dogs and Dog Gear
Hunting with your own bird dog? You’re welcome to bring them along. Please notify us in advance so we can coordinate for the best possible experience.
Be sure to bring:
- Dog vests for thick cover or cold conditions
- Plenty of water and collapsible bowls
- Kennel or crate for safe transport to and from the field
We also provide experienced dogs for guided bird hunts, so if you’re traveling without your own, you’re in great hands.
